Searching through the internet I found a paper art featuring my favorite Disney Princes by Jackie Huang. I visited the artists’ site www.jackiehuang.com   and I discovered a lot more… from my favorite disney characters to incredible folding cards with a great variety of designs.

Jackie Huang was born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri, but she moved out to Los Angeles, California to attend the University of Southern California’s School of Cinematic Arts. Shortly after graduating, she returned to school to study illustration at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California.

Her teachers and mentors convinced her to pursue a paper artist career. She worked at a variety of companies, including two internships with DreamWorks Animation and one at the Walt Disney Company. Now she is a full-time independent artist.

Mrs. Huang was kind enough to give us an interview and we are lucky to find out more about her work but also about her as a person.

How hard it was for you to follow a paper artist carrier? Did you have to make any sacrifices?

I think that financial security is the biggest sacrifice.  You have to learn to live with not knowing where or when your next paycheck is coming. Being a paper artist is like being a very specialized doctor.  You do only a very specific technique that most people won’t require but would like to have done, if they can afford it.  So the hardest part is really finding projects with a good budget and making a decent living.

What are the sources of your inspiration?

For inspiration, I seek it from lots of places – animation, fashion, stationery, packaging, and children’s books.  The biggest inspiration though has been events from my own life.  It may sound cheesy, but I think that’s when I create my best work.  It’s when I can tell the story that no one else can tell.

Do you have a favorite piece of art?

My favorite piece is my Castle in the Sky pop up.  That was the first pop up I ever made and that piece helped me realize I wanted to pursue paper art as a career.

Is it hard for you to be separated from your art?

That’s an interesting question because I don’t think I’ve ever really been separated from my art?  Even as a child, I’d bring a sketchbook and pencil with me to places.  Even now, as long as there’s something to write on, even something like a napkin, and something to write with, I can always make art. For me, I don’t have to create paper art everyday, but I do think I have the need to be creative.  Even if it’s just thinking about an idea in the shower.

What are the 3 things/people etc. you cannot live without?

  1. My husband
  2. My phone
  3. A good sandwich

What do you usually do on your free time?

As an independent artist, it’s hard to really have ‘free’ time.  You’re constantly thinking about how to advance your career or feel the guilt to produce better work.  When I do get a bit of free time, I like to spend it seeing friends.

What are your future plans?

As for my next career goals…I’m still figuring it out.  I really love creating paper art, but I’m still trying to find a place where it fits in the world.  Is it advertising, stationery, galleries, something that hasn’t even been invited?  So I’m still figuring it out but I think it’s all moving me towards children’s books.

If you could wear only one colour for the rest of your life which one would it be and why?

Black.  It’s slimming and won’t show the paint stains.

Thank you Mrs. Jackie Huang
