I remember when I was little on my birthday, the cake was always the same, with minimal variations. What changed was some figures from swans and Disney heroes. Not that I mind as I was actually very lucky because my birthday was in the summer and my parents organized my party at the end of the school year. So it was a whole class farewell party with endless games in our huge backyard back then.

This of course happened during elementary school, because in high school I did not have a party, since we had moved to an apartment building. So the cake became a little bit more important. But still, there were not many options, since we are talking about the 90’s. Some ready-made pastry cakes were the best I could have. Still, I always wanted to have a cake for my birthday.

Now that I’ve become a mother, my kids cake is even more important because I want it to be something they will remember when they grow up. But I am lucky because now pastry has evolved so much that wonderful masterpieces spring from it. Bakers have become real artists. Now you can find cakes in amazing colors, wonderful decoration and even total paintings and sculptures!

I am happy that my children have the opportunity to choose a really special cake and the process of choosing it, is one of the most fun things for my family.
