We can all recognize the Polo Ralph Lauren logo and most of us have in our wardrobe some pieces of clothing of the brand. But what is the real story of its founder?
Get to know his story through ten facts you didn’t know about Ralph Lauren:
- As a child of immigrants in New York, he changed his real name, from Lifschits to Lauren, so that everyone could pronounce his name more easily.
- He was the youngest of four siblings, and he often liked to dress as … Superman, using a towel instead of a cape.
- His father was used to paint murals in corporate offices.
- While still in school he was already working in clothing stores, in the return section, to make money in order to buy clothes and dress nicely.
- His first job was salesman at the Brooks Brothers store on Madison Avenue.
- His career started shortly after 20, when he began designing and making neckties that he packed into boxes.
- His first tie line was named “Polo” while his brand name tags were originally sewn on by his wife and mother on the tie.
- Polo Collection from the beginning had a higher price than the average price of a tie and was soon available at Bloomingdales.
- A few years later, Polo created the first boutique in Bloomingdales.
- In addition to clothes, Ralph Lauren himself designed the space where they were sold. Have you ever noticed the leather armchairs usually found in its stores?
- He was also one of the first people who used to tell a story through the ads they created for magazines and television, instead of just using some pictures of clothes.
