On Sunday, 7th of March, the long-awaited interview of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, Harry & Megan, with the famous presenter Oprah Winfrey, was broadcast on CBS. Pretty much everyone had heard what had happened and led the couple to leave the Royal Family, but the interview came to shed light on many more aspects of this decision.
One of the most important statements Megan made in her interview was that the whole situation had gotten her to the point of thinking about suicide. After confessing it to her husband, the couple asked the Palace for help. The Palace, according to the Duchess, denied the professional support of a psychologist and did nothing to protect her from the press that constantly attacked her.
The British Press had created a climate of animosity between the Duchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton and Megan. The British tabloids created a climate of rivalry and comparison showing a preference to the English Kate instead of the American, foreign and colored Megan.
Megan’s nationality was another issue in the couple’s relationship with the Palace. As she said in the interview, there had been discussions and concerns about the color of the child to be born, even before Megan became pregnant. With great joy, however, the couple announced that they are expecting their second child, which will be a little girl.
Among other things, Megan said that she did what she could to make them proud, although no one took the time to teach her or show her how to behave. Instead she tried in any other way to rise to the occasion, even with the help of the internet.
For his part, Harry said he took matters into his own hands when he realized the plight of his wife, seeing that there was no room for help from the Palace. In fact, having in mind the similar experience with his mother and knowing that history can very easily be repeated, he decided to remove him and his family from the Palace. He even said that if his mother was alive, she would be very angry. He feels lucky he and his wife are united in this and they are helping each other, while he can not imagine how difficult it must have been for his mother, who went through it all alone.
He also seems to be hurt by his father’s behaviour, who shortly before leaving the Palace stopped answering his phone calls. Of course he did not expect this from a man who had gone through a similar situation, so he was well aware of the pain being caused. Of course today he has communication with his father. He also referred to his brother saying that he loves him very much, despite the malice reports for quarrels that appeared in the press and he believes that even if they are at a distance at the moment, time will cure everything.
He admitted that his family never supported Megan, even when there was a racist attack by the British tabloids, they didn’t even make a statement. Unlike more than 70 MPs, Conservatives and Labor, who supported her. However, he partly justifies them, as his family is afraid of being targeted by the tabloids.
The couple currently doesn’t receive any financial support from the Royal Family and lives on Harry’s inheritance by his mother, Princess Diana. In fact, Megan wore a diamond bracelet of the Princess in the interview, thus honoring her in this way.
